Homemade Fries

Day 56

So, we had leftover squash soup around supper time, heating it in a saucepan on the stove. Again, with the pumpernickel bread. But it was still early and we were left feeling hungry later on so I made some fries.

Why Homemade Fries Rock

The best thing about fries is that they are very easy and quick to make. We don't even peel ours, just wash and chop. In like 2 minutes you can have 2 huge platefuls of fries chopped.

Potatoes

Start with a bag of potatoes. Of course, some varieties are better than others for frying, but I generally (always) go with whatever-t-f we have in the pantry. All potatoes are potential fries. In this case, it was 2 baking potatoes leftover from a previous bag, and 1 from our new bag of Eco-Spuds.

Frying

They are fried in sunflower oil for about 10 minutes, so as I said, they are quick to make. We don't have a deep fryer so we use a heavy stainless steel saucepan on the stove top. Of course, you can't fry both batches at once, so it actually takes more like 25 minutes, leaving time to transfer them to paper towels and add salt, but still, comparatively, that's a pretty quick meal.

You can see the difference between the 2 types of potatoes below. The baking potatoes are the browner ones. The pale fries are from new potatoes.

Pfft. Homemade fries. Always kickass. We're outta ketchup now though. Must remember that. Laura loved them too. She was craving fries.
